Climbing Kilimanjaro 2

We set out from Machame Camp (2980 m) and started hiking towards Shira Camp (3840 m). In the morning the rocks and mud were very slippery so I had to walk carefully. We had definitely left the forest and were entering a strange world. There were lots of mosses on the rocks and hanging from dead trees. There were also beautiful alpine flowers alongside the trail. The trail was steeper than the day before, but the exercise felt good. It was vigorous but enjoyable. The walking sticks helped for balance and to take weight off my injured knee. The weather was cool and foggy, but I soon warmed up from the exercise and had to take my jacket off. The porters all had matching jackets so they looked like a real team. They carried some of the weight in backpacks and some of it on their heads. I was glad I wasn’t a porter.

Dear Adrian, Joan alerted us to your latest blog.. gosh they are long!!!! But very absorbing to read so keep it up. You won’t have time to do these things once you get home so it’s great you are making the most of the life out there. What an exciting climb. Its an intersting job for the porters..since most locals probably don’t like walking! Is it considered quite a good job or are they students or something. What do you pay them and did they know the route? I’d be very anxious about getting lost in bad waether! Hoping to see RAmsey soon. What a pity you won’t be over this year.. so many stories to tell us. Kath has just finished her mammoth 2 day cycle across England#s mountainous (not by Kilo’s standards!!) middle. Quite a feat and her group raised over 20000 for cancer relief. She was quite taken with your Kilo. trip as it’s often used here as a fund raiser but it seems to me that the money spent getting there etc. would be better just gien to the charity. Scuse mistakes… am in a terrible hurry. Love Judith (Aunt)
ps when it says publish does it mean everyone can read this! Hope not.. how awful. I shoudl e mail it but can’t now be bothered
